2001 August/Editorial

Dear Friends and Benefactors,

In the month of August, since we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the 22nd it is perhaps fitting that I address these few words to you about our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. God wants devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, that is what our Lady told us at Fatima. So let us prepare our hearts and minds to receive the special blessings that God wants to give to all those who honour the Immaculate Heart. Now, what is the theological significance of this devotion given such prominence at Fatima but which already existed long before that event. Well, Our Divine Lord complained to St. Margaret Mary of the coldness of the hearts of men towards His Sacred Heart and wanted souls to be inflamed with a new love of God through this love of the Sacred Heart. Similarly it is through the Immaculate Heart of Mary that we learn to live according to the Heart of Jesus. This is what it says in the collect of the Mass on the 22nd. She thus fulfills her role as the co-redemptrix and mediatrix and becomes our short cut to God and His divine wily. True devotion to Mary is, as St. Louis de Montfort says, the easiest way to save our souls precisely by forming Jesus Christ in them.

An example of our devotion could be the Feast of the Assumption which is no longer a Holy Day of Obligation in this country. Nonetheless, out of devotion, we can still observe it as if it were. In Durban there will be a day of Solemn adoration to pray especially for this country. Let us too join them in prayer and penance as Our Lady so often requested.

May God bless you,

Fr. L. Gerspacher
