Fr. Daniels giving a sermon on vocations during his visit home.
He is now Rector of Holy Cross Seminary and no doubt
on the lookout for a few hopeful vocations.

A trip to Johannesburg Zoo on the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas
for the school children and a few extra. The teachers
Mrs. Massari (left) and Miss Furstenberg (far right) are assisted in their work
by Sr. Elizabeth Maria (left) and Sr. Maria da las Lagrimas (right) and

Adelinah Mosese (third from right) our resident catechist
with some of her students and other faithful from the nearby township of Dobsonville.
Adelinah has been a fathful of Our Lady of Sorrows for many years,
rendering much needed assistance with African languages.

Miss Ruth Ramsbottom recently led a trip to Pilgrim's Rest
to recover a number of old Mass vestments from the old Catholic church there.
Her roots go many years back in this historic mining town of the Eastern Transvaal.
She relates, "My maternal great-grandfather, William James Phelan, came to Pilgrim's Rest
between 1870 and 1875 and was editor of the "Gold Fields Mercury".
The picture is of a citation which was presented to him by the miners of Pilgrim's Rest
for the support given to them by his newspaper in a dispute with the Government.
Mr. Phelan was sentenced to 2 weeks' imprisonment for his criticism
but the miners stormed the gaol and released him.
This was considered a revolt and a detachment of soldiers - 25 men and a cannon! -
was sent from Lydenburg, but good sense prevailed and it all came to naught.
